7th and 8th Grade Art
I design the 7th and 8th Grade Art curriculum focusing on further developing students' art skills, vocabulary, creativity, and concepts of design. The students work on long and short-term projects while discovering new ideas about themselves and the world. We will almost always write something about our art. Usually this will take place as an object label as one might find in a museum and be in each student’s own words and handwriting.
Drawing We will learn to increasingly accurately draw and shade objects, people, and faces in a realistic manner as well as in fantastical, expressive styles. We will learn how to draw using one and two point perspective. We will use drawing pencils, pen and ink, watercolor pencils, color pencils, and charcoal. We will also use smudging sticks, graphite sticks, mirrors, and rulers,
Painting We will learn the techniques and application of watercolors, tempera, and acrylic paints while painting on various papers and canvas.
Mixed Media Working with a wide range of media such as tissue paper, color pencils, oil pastels, charcoals, color paper, scissors, cloth, paints and brushes, pen and ink, waxed thread, sewing needles, cardboard, fabric, new and recycled materials, various adhesives, and more, we will learn to take care of delicate and sophisticated art materials and acquire increasing complex skills.
Color Theory We will learn the relationships between primary, secondary, and tertiary colors while mastering mixing hues and values and the vocabulary of color theory.
Printmaking Positive and negative space and composition will be carefully investigated as we learn to safely and effectively use gauging tools to carve designs into linoleum blocks as well as use cardboard and foam for other relief prints.
Conceptual Art On top of all our exploration of technique, style, and materials, we will also explore conceptualism or art in which the ideas and rich meaning involved may be more important than the finished form.
Art History / Art Appreciation Throughout Middle School, we will explore a wide range of ideas about the rich history, diverse meaning, and varied purpose of art.
For 8 weeks in the Spring, 7th and 8th grade students will attend ceramics classes at the Hyde Park Art Center where they will work with clay, experiencing the pinch-pot, slab, and coil methods of hand building as well as wheel work and glazing.
